Since 1956 three departments took the responsibility of the Civil
Engineering teaching program, namely “Structural Engineering, Irrigation and
Hydraulics and Public Works” Departments. Prior to 1956, these three
specializations were grouped under the Civil Engineering Department. The
undergraduate courses of civil engineering are split between the three
departments.
The Public Works department is responsible of
teaching the following courses for civil engineering students
- First year: Surveying
- Second year: Geodesy & Photogrametry Applied Statistics
- Third year: Soil Mechanics
Transport Planning & Traffic Engineering
- Fourth year: Highways and Airports Engineering-I Railways
Engineering-I Sanitary Engineering-I Foundations
In addition, the following elective courses are
taught under the Departments direct responsibilities
- Engineering Applications of Surveying
- Highways and Airports Engineering
- Railway Engineering
- Sanitary Engineering
- Transport and Traffic Planning and Engineering
- Soil Mechanics and Foundations
Civil Engineering B.Sc. projects are also supervised by the department
staff in the areas of the above mentioned elective courses. The department
is also in charge of the post graduate Diplomas, M.Sc. and Ph.D. Programs in
the above areas.
In cooperation with the “Structural Engineering”
and “Irrigation and Hydraulics” Departments, the Public Works Department
shares the responsibility of teaching the following undergraduate subjects
to 3rd year civil engineering
- Management of Civil Engineering Projects
- Economics and Law.
Furthermore, the Public Work Department undertakes the responsibility of
teaching Surveying and Soil Mechanics & Foundations to non-civil engineering
undergraduates as well as other subjects (e.g. Highways Engineering,
Transport and Traffic Engineering, Sanitary Engineering ) to postgraduates
of other departments in the Faculty and to other Faculties of Cairo
University.
